Doubled haploid lines are advantageous since they are homozygous or fixed lines, and as such can be replicated in trials allowing better estimates of within and between line variation. Haploid plantlets produced from embryos usually undergo spontaneous doubling producing DH lines (this can be achieved using colchicine colchicine binds to tubulin and prevents microtuble polymerisation, acting as a mitotic poison, pretty potent for a plant derived secondary metabolite). The F 1 individuals will be heterozygous these lines are also used to produce doubled haploid lines (DH lines) using microspore culture. A trial of rubberised asphalt at the EcoPark site in Tuen Mun is in progress. However, it has to be able to withstand the heat and heavy rains experienced in Hong Kong. It is quiet, long lasting and contains rubber granules made with waste tyres so there is the additional benefit of reducing waste. Rubberised asphalt has been proven effective in other countries. The EPD therefore has been investigating more durable materials for low noise road surfaces. The frequent stop and go nature of local traffic, particularly involving heavy vehicles and roads with slopes, can quickly wear down the surfaces. Low noise road surfaces are a standard requirement for high-speed roads, but their use is more difficult on local, low-speed roads. By giving warning and talking with operators, we are able to avert prosecutions and promptly improve the noise environment. A noise abatement notice was issued and we liaised with the restaurant owner, who promptly made adjustments that reduced the noise to ten decibels below the night limit. Its air-conditioning system was ten decibels above the permitted night-time noise limit and complaints were received. One example was a fast food restaurant that started operating 24 hours a day. In 2007 we issued some 80 noise abatement notices. If they still persist with making too much noise, we will prosecute them.

We talk to the operators and explain the seriousness of the problem, and leave it to them to decide how to reduce their noise.

The EPD issues noise abatement notices to these noise offenders. Most operators do this voluntarily, but a few are reluctant to make the necessary adjustments to their businesses. Our ultimate goal is for people to understand the problem of noise pollution and take action to reduce it. The EPD's achievement in creating this noise map and accompanying 3-D tools has been recognised internationally and we have been invited to chair noise mapping sessions at several scientific conferences. Our noise map was published on the web in 2006 вЂ“ about a year before European states were required to produce their own noise maps. Our calculation model includes about 100 000 buildings, 1 600 kilometres of busy roads, geographic information such as hills, terrains, podiums, barriers, road surface types and enclosures, and traffic data such as traffic flow, composition and speed. We therefore needed a 3-D noise model to supplement our assessment of the road traffic noise impacts of individual projects.ДЄn enormous amount of data had to be collected to produce the noise map. However, most people here live in high rises and we wanted to measure the impacts on people living on different floors, and make it understandable to the layman. A two-dimensional map would certainly be useful from a global perspective. The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) decided several years ago to develop a traffic noise map for Hong Kong. Noise maps are very useful in identifying problem areas and measuring the impacts of mitigation measures (see Mapping Noise for details).
